Mr. Istvan, you are considered the spearhead of the entire transhumanist movement, which was born and is more and more widespread in the USA, still little in Europe, but worries world players like the same Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and in the past also scientist like Hawking himself. Why so much clamor and why such mistrust or even?
- I think many people are skeptical of transhumanism because of religion. Religion says there is an afterlife and we should avoid messing around with changing the human body. But transhumanism wants to overcome death and merge the human being into a machine. So many people are skeptical of the movement.
Transhuamnism is inserted into the vein of scientific-evolutionist thought inaugurated two centuries ago. But, not only in my opinion, the roots go back to the scientific thought, which Heidegger calls “initial”, of the presocratic philosophers and physicist of ancient Greece when in the West the relationship among things develops through the use of the mind and therefore a system that we can define as “intelligent”: what is “intelligence” and how can we distinguish it from what we still today call “artificial intelligence”?
- It’s still very difficult to tell what exactly intelligence is, since humans have nothing to compare own intelligence to that might show that we’re not that smart. However, intelligence is clearly a facet of biology and hundreds of millions of neurons firing in the brain. Eventually we’ll have computers and artificial intelligence with the same amount of electro-signal capablilities, and then we might quickly have a machine intelligence that shows us real intelligence, beyond just the three pounds of meat we call our brains.
In your opinion, can we think of the minimum unity of “information” as the basic brick of Democritus necessary for the comprehension of the architecture of the whole cosmos?
- Yes, I would say that bits of energy or matter, which could be conveyed as information, makes up the universe, and that the only way for intelligent life to understand it.
Mr. Zoltan, physicists like Penrose have argued that what we call “consciousness” emerges at a more complex level of interactions between energy and matter. Others, like Teillard de Chardin and Ray Kurzweil, and more recently film directors like Besson and Pfister, have imagined an evolutionary path, from the human to the posthuman, somehow referring to a complete “computerization” of matter and then to life forms with pure energy. For now, what is your idea of what we call “conscience”?
- My idea of consciousness is something that says: I believe I think, therefore I am. To me, consciousness it a belief at it’s core. It’s more than just saying “I am alive.” It’s the recognition of undertstanding what that “being alive” means. Here’s an article I wrote on consciousness you might enjoy:https://techcrunch.com/2015/10/17/programming-hate-into-ai-will-be-controversial-but-possibly-necessary/

You were a candidate for the last US presidential elections. Let me, Zoltan, was yours only a provocation? Do you believe that in the present, and even more in the future, scientists and AI can and should play a more important or decisive role in politics?
- I absolutely believe the world would be much better is scientists were running government. They simply would use more “reason” when making decisions, something our own politicians don’t do much of. In the 20 year future, robots may be running government, and then I expect a utopia, since their decisions will always be so good.
Finally, but never to conclude, how do you imagine our near and far future?
- 6. I think the most important science of the 21st Century is genetic editing. I think we will soon enter the age of designer babies, and this will give us new bodies and much higher IQs, and also the ability to live longer and not get diseases, since we will program out DNA not to get disease.
